Tahar Rahim is a French actor of Algerian descent. He is well recognised for his roles as Malik El Djebena in Jacques Audiard’s award-winning French film A Prophet, FBI Agent Ali Soufan in The Looming Tower, Judas in Mary Magdalene, and Charles Sobhraj in The Serpent. Rahim received critical acclaim and Golden Globe and BAFTA Award nominations for Best Actor in a Leading Role.
Tahar Rahim was born on 4 July, 1981 in Belfor, France. After his birth, family had immigrated from the region of Oran, Algeria. Rahim first enrolled in a sports programme before moving on to a computer science programme. Rahim chose to pursue his passion and began studying film at the Paul Valéry University of Montpellier after two years of boredom studying the topics in Strasbourg and Marseille. In 2006, fellow Belfortain Cyril Mennegun produced a documentary titled “Tahar, student,” which broadcast on French television channel France 5. Rahim then relocated to Paris in 2005, where he studied drama at the Laboratoire de l’Acteur under Hélène Zidi-Chéruy while still working in a factory during the week and a nightclub on weekends to supplement his income.
Rahim landed a role in the hit Canal+ television series La Commune, penned by Abdel Raouf Dafri, in mid-2006 after signing with an agent. The original draught of the script for A Prophet was written by Dafri. When Rahim and Audiard were leaving a set, they happened to share a cab. He went through a gruelling three months of auditions after a two-line performance in the 2008 horror film Inside, starring Béatrice Dalle. He won his breakout role after eight callbacks. Rahim also acted in the controversial Chinese film Love and Bruises, directed by Lou Ye. The director, who has been barred from creating films by the Chinese government twice, most likely met Tahar during the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, where they both presented Spring Fever and A Prophet. The film Love and Bruises is based on Jie Liu Falin’s forbidden biography.
He starred in Free Men, a biography directed by Ismael Ferroukhi of Le Grand Voyage about Si Kaddour Benghabrit, the founder of the Great Mosque of Paris. He was chosen to serve on the jury at the Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard section in 2015. He starred in The Last Panthers, a European crime thriller television series. In 2018, he played Judas in Helen Edmundson’s film Mary Magdalene, in which he played Judas. In the United States, he played FBI agent Ali Soufan in the film The Looming Tower. He was nominated for a Golden Globe in 2021 for his performance as Mohamedou Ould Salahi in The Mauritanian. Rahim was also a member of the jury at the 74th Cannes Film Festival. In 2022, Deadline announced that he would play Paul Barras in Ridley Scott’s Napoleon, which would be filmed in 2023 and starring Joaquin Phoenix, for Apple TV+. In Rebecca Miller’s upcoming film She Came to Me, he will star alongside Anne Hathaway.
