Ricky Dene Gervais was born on 25 June, 1961 at Battle Hospital in Reading , Berkshire. Ricky’s father Lawrence Raymond ‘Jerry’ Gervais is a French Canadian and mother Eva Sophia was English. His father worked as a labourer and hod carrier. At the age of 74 his mother died due to lung cancer. His family moved to Whitley suburb of Reading with her sister Marsha, brothers Larry and Robert. Gervais attended Whitley Park Infants and Junior Schools before attending Ashmead Comprehensive School for his secondary education. After taking a year off to work as a gardener at the University of Reading, he enrolled at University College London (UCL) in 1980.
His career was started when he was a student at University College London. He was signed by London Records, which released two singles-“More to Lose” and “Bitter Heart”.
He also worked as an assistant events manager for University of London Union, then was worked as head of speech at the alternative radio station Xfm. Gervais has written several sketches for ITV’s BAFTA-winning sketch show The Sketch Show. In September 1998, he made his mainstream television debut as part of Channel 4’s Comedy Lab pilot series.Gervais rose to national prominence in early 1999 with an obnoxious, cutting persona featured in a topical slot that replaced Ali G’s segments on the satirical Channel 4 comedy show The 11 O’Clock Show, in which his character used as many expletives as possible and made an excessive number of politically incorrect statements.
Gervais also contributed writing to the BBC sketch shows Bruiser and The Jim Tavare Show.
Gervais began performing stand-up comedy in the late 1990s. His first successful show was at the Cafe Royal during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2001. It was titled Rubbernecker and starred Jimmy Carr, Robin Ince, and Stephen Merchant. In 2003, Gervais toured the United Kingdom with his stand-up show Animals. A year later, the Politics tour began. Both shows were taped for DVD release and television broadcast. Fame, the third instalment of the themed live trilogy, took place in 2007. In January 2007, Gervais included a routine ostensibly about how people will do anything to become famous, referring to the murder of prostitutes in Ipswich. This sparked some controversy.
Gervais’ fourth show, Science, began an eleven-city tour in August 2009 at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre in Glasgow. He headlined the sixth annual New York Comedy Festival at Carnegie Hall in November 2009. Gervais announced in 2013 that his next stand-up show would be called Humanity.
Gervais went on a live tour as David Brent with his band Foregone Conclusion, Brent’s fictional band in The Office, in 2013.
He and the band performed songs written by Brent, such as “Equality Street” and “Free Love Freeway.”

In late 2018, Gervais announced his next tour and Netflix special SuperNature, warning fans not to travel to see the “work in progress” because it would be a “shambles.” SuperNature shows will be held in 2019 and 2020. The SuperNature tours resumed in August 2021, following significant cancellations and postponements as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
