Praveen Kumar Sobti who played the role of Bheem in B R Chopra’s Mahabharat died on 7 February at his Delhi residence. He was born on 6 dec, 1974 at Sarhali Kalan, Punjab. In family he has wife,two kids, and five siblings. He was an Indian hammer and discus thrower, film actor, and former soldier of the Border Security Force.
He died after suffering a heart attack, “ He had a chronic chest infection problem. A relative of Praveen told PTI,” We called the doctor at home when he started feeling uneasy. He passed away at night in timing10-10:30 pm.
When he was 20, he joined the Border Security Force. Officers were very impressed by his athlete skills and he hot chance to represent India at various athletic events in “Discuss Throw”. He was the star of Indian athletics in the 1960s and the 1970s. He dominated the Indian Hammer and Discuss throws for several years and in the year 1966, he was awarded the gold medal in the discus throw. He won four medals in the Asian games, including two gold medals, won a silver medal in the CommonWealth games, and completed two Olympics. He competed in the 1968 Summer Olympics and the 1972 Summer Olympics.
After retirement from sports in his 30s, he turned his career to acting.
In the year 1981, his first debut film was ‘Raksha’, a James Bond Style Indian movie starring Jeetendra with him playing the role of henchman Gorilla. In the same year, he played a similar role as large henchman Justin in ‘ Meri Awaaz Suno ‘ movie. Further, he was followed with many movies-’Ghazab’, ‘Humse Na Jeeta Koi’, ‘ Humse Hai Zamana’, ‘Lorie’, ‘Raaj Tilak’, ‘Hum Hain Lajwab’, ‘Jagir’, ’Karishma Kudrat Ka’, ‘Yudh’, ’Zabardast’, Aakhir Kyon’, ‘ Maha Shaktimaan’, ‘Singhasan’, ‘ Manav Hatya’, ‘Chambal Ka Badshah’, ‘Adhikar’, ‘Avinash’, ‘Raat Ke Baad’, ‘Naam O Nishan’, ‘ Waqt ka Badshah’, ‘ Beta Ho to Aisa’, ‘Mahabharat Aur Barbareek’ and many more. Praveen played the semi-comedic role of the legendary ‘ Mukhtar Singh’.
Praveen Kumar Sobti got fame when he played the character of ‘Bheem’ due to his physique and height. In B R Chopra’s popular tale serial Mahabharata, making him a household name. After this role, he played the role of ‘Saaboo’ in ‘Chacha Chaudhary’ for a large number of episodes. After cutting down on his acting career, he joined politics. In the year 2013, he joined Aam Aadmi Party. He contested the Delhi assembly elections from the Wazirpur constituency on an AAP ticket but lost. The next year, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.
