Early Life and Biography
Phil Hampson Knight was born on 24 Feb, 1938 in Portland, Oregon to parents Bill Knight and Lota Cloy Knight. His father was lawyer and newspaper publisher. He did his schooling from Cleveland High School. For graduation of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity he joined University of Oregon in Eugene. In 1962, he completed his master degree in business administration from Stanford.
In the beginning of his career he worked as Certified Public Accountant Coopers & Lybrand, Price Waterhouse.After that he worked as a professor at Portland State University. Next, Knight joined the army and spent one year on active duty and seven years in the Army Reserve.Knight visited Japan and he was impressed by the quality of Tiger brand running shoes manufactured by Onitsuka Co and had obtained distribution rights for Tiger in the western United States.When Knight received the shoe samples, he mailed two pairs to Bowerman at the University of Oregon, hoping for a sale as well as an influential endorsement. To Knight’s surprise, Bowerman not only ordered the Tiger shoes, but also offered to collaborate with Knight on product design. On January 25, 1964, the birth date of Blue Ribbon Sports, the company that would later become Nike, the two men agreed to a handshake partnership.
By 1969, Knight had been able to leave his accountant job and work full-time for Blue Ribbon Sports. At Nike, Knight formed personal bonds with some of the world’s most well-known athletes, including Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods.
Knight appointed his son to the board in late 2003, and after Vinton stepped down—prior to receiving a severance package—Knight rebranded the company Laika. He then invested $180 million in Laika, and the studio released its first stop-motion feature film, Coraline, in 2009. Coraline was a financial success, and Travis Knight was promoted to CEO and President of Laika. On November 18, 2004, several months after Matthew’s death, Knight resigned as Nike CEO, but remained chairman of the board.Knight and Nike announced in June 2015 that he would step down as chairman, with president and CEO Mark Parker succeeding him.
Phil Knight was married to Penelope “Penny” Parks in Sep, 1968. Couple have two sons-Matthew and Travis Knight. Mtthew was died due to heart attack in a scuba diving accident in 2004.
