Early Life and Biography
Metro Boomin was born as Leland Wayne on 16 Sep, 1993 in St Louis Missouri, United States. He attended Parkway North High School. At the age of 13 he started playing musical instruments. He has one sister and one brother. In 11th grade he travelled to Atlanta to pursue a career in music. While still in high school, he began to use online social media platforms like Twitter to network with more established rap artists and to submit beats for potential music placements.
As per reports on 5 June, his mother Leslie Joanne Wayne was killed by his step father. His father who also died after suicide.
Metro Boomin began his career in school time. He collaborated with various professional artists- Nicki Minaj, Ludacris, Juicy J, Yo Gotti, 21 Savage, Wiz Khalifa, Chief Keef, The Weeknd, YG, Young Jeezy, Meek Mill, Travis Scott, Ace Hood, Young Scooter, Young Thug, Rich Homie Quan, Trinidad James, Drake, Lana Del Rey, Lil Uzi Vert, Migos, DJ Khaled, Schoolboy Q, Post Malone. Metro officially released his debut mixtape, 19 & Boomin, in May 2013. Metro and Young Thug announced in March 2014 that they would release a collaborative album under the moniker “Metro Thuggin.” The album was to be self-titled and scheduled for release in 2015. Metro Thuggin released the collaborative track “The Blanguage” alongside the announcement. The ‘Metro Thuggin’ project was eventually abandoned, but photographer Cam Kirk claims to have a copy of the finished album.
Metro appeared on Nicki Minaj’s third studio album, The Pinkprint, in 2014. Metro executive produced Future’s Monster mixtape in October 2014. Metro also produced Future’s Honest’s sixth single, “I Won,” which features Kanye West. Metro was also an executive producer on Future’s 2016 mixtape, Purple Reign, alongside DJ Esco. He was named Producer of the Year at the BET Hip Hop Awards in 2016.
Metro Boomin was credited with producing charting hits such as Future and Drake’s “Jumpman,” Migos’ “Bad and Boujee,” Future and The Weeknd’s “Low Life,” and 21 Savage’s “X” in 2016. He also contributed to Kanye West’s The Life of Pablo and released the EP Savage Mode with 21 Savage. In 2017, he produced charting singles by Kodak Black, Big Sean, Future, and 21 Savage, including “Tunnel Vision” and “Bounce Back.”
Metro and fellow record producer Nav released two singles, “Perfect Timing (Intro)” and “Call Me,” as the lead singles from their collaborative mixtape, Perfect Timing, in 2017. Metro and American rapper Big Sean released the lead single from their collaborative studio album, Double or Nothing, titled “Pull Up n Wreck,” featuring American rapper 21 Savage. The lead single in 2018 was “So Good,” which featured American rapper Kash Doll.
Metro Boomin was featured in a Gap campaign with American singer SZA in January 2018, along with a self-produced remix of “Hold Me Now.” On his Instagram page, Metro Boomin announced his “retirement” from rap, changing his bio to “Retired record producer/DJ.” With Illangelo and Dre Moon, he co-produced The Weeknd’s fourth Billboard Hot 100 number-one single, “Heartless,” in 2019. After Hours, the singer’s fourth studio album, was released as the lead single (2020).
