Melissa Lou Etheridge  is a professional singer, songwriter, guitarist. For the track “Ain’t It Heavy” from her third album, Never Enough, Etheridge won her first Grammy award in 1993. Greatest Hits: The Road Less Traveled was Etheridge’s debut compilation CD. The album was a hit, landing at No. 14 on the Billboard 200 and quickly becoming Gold. One Way Out is her most recent studio album (2021).


Melissa Etheridge was born on 29 May, 1961 in Leavenworth, Kansas to parents   Elizabeth , a computer  consultant and John Etheridge, an American Constitution teacher. She is younger child among three. Her father died in 1991.  She was graduated from  high school and did college from Berklee  College of Music, where she played  the club circuit  around Boston.


In starting of her career she perfromed at  Vermie’s  a bar in  Pasadena, California in a play. Bill Leopold, a manager  in the music business was  impressed from her performance and gave her chance in music career. Melissa signed  a publishing deal  to write songs  for films. She completed her stripped-down, self-titled debut in just four days after an unreleased first effort was rejected by Island Records as being too polished and glossy. Melissa Etheridge’s self-titled debut album was an underground sensation, and the single “Bring Me Some Water” did well on the radio and was nominated for a Grammy Award.Brave and Crazy, Etheridge’s second album, was released in 1989.  Brave and Crazy followed the same musical concept as her self-titled debut and was nominated for a Grammy. Never Enough, Etheridge’s third album, was released in 1992. Never Enough, like her previous two albums, didn’t chart at #1, but it did earn Etheridge her first Grammy for Best Rock Vocal Performance, Female for her hit “Ain’t It Heavy.”

In honour of her recently deceased father, Etheridge established a performing arts scholarship at Leavenworth High School in 1992. Her father bought her first guitar, according to Etheridge, and “would come with me to clubs in the region when I played since I was underage.”

Etheridge came out as a lesbian in public in January 1993. Yes I Am, her mainstream breakthrough album, was released on September 21, 1993. Yes I Am, which was co-produced with Hugh Padgham, spent 138 weeks on the Billboard 200 lists, peaking at No. 15. For her track “Come to My Window,” based on an unnerving sequence in the Pavarotti film “Yes, Giorgio,” Etheridge won her second Grammy for Best Rock Vocal Performance, Female. She also received two more nominations for “I’m the Only One” and “Come to My Window” in the Best Rock Song category, but lost to Bruce Springsteen’s “Streets of Philadelphia.”

VH-1 also honoured her in 1994 for her efforts with the AIDS group L.A. Shanti. She highlighted the televised event with a performance of “I’m the Only One” and a duet with Sammy Hagar performing The Rolling Stones’ classic “Honky Tonk Woman.” Yes I Am’s success helped boost Etheridge’s earlier albums’ sales. Melissa Etheridge received a 2 platinum RIAA certification in 1995, while Never Enough received a platinum RIAA certification in 1996.

Personal Life

 In year 1993 it was confirmed by Melissa that she is a lesbian. In 2002 she started dating  Tammy Lync  Michaels  and in 2003  they two had officially committed.  Michaels have birth  to fraternal twins-Johnie  Rose and  Miller Steven.  In 2010, Melissa and Michales  announced that they had separated because California court ban  on gay marriage. Previously she was in a relationship with  Julie Cypher  from 1990. Cypher and Melissa  have two  children Bailey  Jean Cypher  and  Beckett Cypher.

In 2014 she was married to  Linda Wallem at San  Ysidro  Ranch in Montecito, Calif.
