Lata Mangeshkar was admitted to Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital on the 8th of January after testing covid positive. She is being monitored by the doctors in the Intensive Care Unit and does best for her fast recovery.
She is the legendary playback singer in the history of Bollywood, was born on 28 September 1929. She entertained and inspired many people with their distinctive voices. She is the daughter of Dinanath Mangeshkar, who was a famous Marathi stage personality popularly known as Master Dinananth. Lata Mangeshkar is the eldest among 5 siblings.
She started her carrier at a very young age and has sung more than 50000 songs for many heroines, from Madhubala to Aishwarya Rai Bachhan. She recorded her first song at the age of 13 and was trained from age five by her father, a disciple of Gwalior Gharana . In the year 1942, her father Dina Nath was passed away when she was 13 and leftover huge responsibility in the hands of Lata Mangeshkar. As she was a teenager at that time she struggled to help and support her family. In 1942, Vinayak Damodar owner of Navyug Chitrapat Company gave an opportunity for sang the song “ Nachu Yaa Gade” for a Marathi Movie, but unfortunately, it was cut from the final release. In 1943, she recorded her first song for a Marathi movie. In 1949 she moved to Bombay and took lessons of Hindustani Classical music with Ustad Amanat Ali Khan and then after the partition of Pakistan she began studying with Pt Tulsidas Sharma.
Lata Mangeshkar is a versatile singer and has sung many songs in different languages ranging from bhakti songs, love songs, classical songs. She is also known as “Nightingale of India”, her voice has breathed life. Her sweet voice is able to unify and bind people who have been divided for a long time. In 1949 she recorded the song ”Uthaye Ja Unke Sitam”. From that day she voiced for various ladies, representing every generation of Hindi Cinema from Nargis to Madhuri Dixit. She has worked with several legendary music directors –R D Burman, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Madan Mohan, A R Rehman. In 1960 she teamed up with Madan Mohan and sang hit songs like- Lag Ja Gale, Aap ki Nazron ne Samjha, Naina Barse Rim Jhim.
She also has a history with Laxmikant-Pyarelal and has sung over 700 songs – Mere Naseeb Mein Tu hai ya nahi, Sheesha ho ya dil ho. She contributed a great deal to the commercial success of such films as Satyam Shivam Sundram, Barsaat, Maine Pyar Kiya, and many more hit movies. Lata also
teamed with S D Burman and sang songs for various movies- Chote Nawab(1961), Kuch Na Kaho(1942). She was notable among her concert performances and sang poet Pardeep’s patriotic song “Ae Mere Want Ke Logo” which also moved Indian Prime minister Jawahar Lal Nehru to tears. In 2012, Lata Mangeshkar launched her own music company called LM music and sang bhajans with her sister Usha.
Lata Mangeshkar has achieved several biggest awards. In 2001, Lata Mangaeshkar was honored with Bharta Ratna . In 1974 she became the first Indian to perform at Royal Albert Hall. She received three national Awards, 15 Bengal Film journalists association awards, four Filmfare best female playback awards, 2 Filmfare special awards, Filmfare lifetime achievement award. In 1989 she was respected with the Dadasaheb Phalke award. She also holds the distinction of being the most recorded artist in the history of Indian music in 1974. In 2012 as per the greatest Indian poll of outlook India ranked Lata Mangeshkar in 10th position. She has also been bestowed the best director award by the Maharashtra state of government for the film Sadhi Manase. There is a book titled-“Lata Mangeshkar- A musical journey” which describes the story of the queen of Hindi music from the 1940s to the present was also published by Yatinder Mishra.
