Biography
KJ Apa was born on 17 June, 1997 at Waitakere Hospital in Auckland, New Zealand. His parents are Tupa’i and Tessa Apa. He has two older sisters and is nephew of former rugby union player and coach Michael Jones. Before starting his acting career, he went to King’s College in Auckland for high school.
Career
Apa featured as Kane Jenkins in the New Zealand prime-time soap drama Shortland Street from 2013 to 2015. After a four-month worldwide talent search, he was cast as Archie Andrews in the CW drama series Riverdale in 2016. In 2017, he played as adolescent Ethan Montgomery in the comedy-drama film A Dog’s Purpose, which was released on the same day that Riverdale started on TV. In the 2018 drama film The Hate U Give, he played the part of Kian Lawley’s replacement. In the Netflix film The Last Summer, which was released on May 3, 2019, he played Griffin. In March 2020, he also starred as musician Jeremy Camp in the biographical romantic drama film I Still Believe. Apa featured in Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes’ critically panned 2020 thriller Songbird, directed by Adam Mason. Lionsgate Films announced in May 2021 that he would star in the military drama West Pointer.
