Kamal Haasan is famous personality of film industry. He is an actor, filmmamker, director, lyricist, playback singer, choreography and politician. He primarily works for Tamil Cinema and also worked in Telugu, Malyalam, Kannada, Bengali films. He has won 4 National Film Awards and 20 filmfare awards. He was awarded with Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan award and Lifetime achievement award.
Biography
Kamal Haasan was born on 7 November 1954 in a Tamil Lyengar family. His initial name was Parthasarathy, later his name was changed to Kamal Hassan.His father was a lawyer, freedom fighter and mother Rajalakshami Srinivasanis a housewife. In the family he has 3 siblings-2 elder brothers (Charuhasan and Chandrahasan) and 1 elder sister(Nalini).He completed his primary schooling in Paramkudi and higher education in Santhome, Madras.
Relationship
In year 1978, he was married with dancer Vani Ganapathy. They divorced after ten years of marriage. In 1988, Haasan and Sarika married after the birth of their first child- Shruti(1986). Sarika was also working in acting line but she stopped after their marriage and worked as Haasan’s costume designer. In year 2004 couple took divorce. Couple has tow daughters-Shruti Haasan and Akshara Haasan. Then,he was in a relationship with actress Gautami. But later on Gautami announced on her blog that she had ended her relationship.
Career
In year 1960 he began his career in ‘Kalathur Kannamma’. He also awarded with Rashtrapati Award for his performance at age 6. He debuted in Malayalam film industry with Kannum Karalum. Then he took break for seven years from the industry and returned to industry as a dance assistant under choreographer Thankappan. In year 1970 , his first appearance in film Maanavan. In year 1974 he played his first lead role in Malyalam film- Kanyakumari for which he received first Filmfare award. Then he got another movie as a lead role in Balachander’s’ Apoorva Raagangal’, and this role won him his second filmfare award. He got third Filmfare award for his performance in Balachander’s ‘Manmadha Leelai’(1976).n 1977, he starred Bharathirajaa’s directorial debut ’16 Vayathinile’, and awarded with Best actor award. He won another fifth Filmfare Award for Bharathirajaa’s ‘Sigappu Rojakkal’(1978). Later, he won sixth Filmfare Award for Malyalam movie-’Eeta’. At the end of 1970’s he was awarded with six regional Best actor Filmfare awards.
In 1980 film-Varumayin Niram Sivappu, in which he played the role of unemployed youth and this movie helped him to won Filmfare Award. Then in year he made his first debut in Hindi cinema in movie’ Ek Duje Ke Liye’ along with co-actor Rati Agnihotri. In 1981 he appeared in his 100th film titled ‘Raja Paarvai’ for which he won a firmware award too. After a year Hassan won three National Awards for Best Actor in Bala Mahenra’s Moondram Pirai. During 1980’s he apperaed in Bollyood movies-’Yeh to Kamaal Ho Gya’ and ‘Zara Si Zindagi’. Then later he won Nandi Award for Best Actor and second Filmfare Best Telugu Actor Award for ‘ Sagara Sangamam’,for alcholic classical dancer role. In 1984 he was awarded for Filmfare Best Actor Award for ‘Saagar’ movie. He left bollywood after appeared in ‘Geraftaar’ and ‘Dekha Pyar Tumhara’ movies. In year 1987 he appeared in Mani Ratnam’s film-’Nayakan’ and received second Indian National Award for his performance. Then follow up by many movies-’Pushpaka Vimana’,’Unnal Mudiyum Thambi’, ‘Daisy’,’Saathiya’. In the end of 1980’s Hassan was successful in Malyalam, Kannada, Telugu and Hindi film indutries.
In 1990’s he was appeared in Michael Madana Kama Rajan comedy film and won Best Actor Award for movies-’Gunaa’ and ‘ Thevar Magan’.He also received third National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil as a producer for ‘Thevar Magan’. Then later he produced many movies-Singaravelan, Maharasan, Kalaignan, Sathi Leelavathi, Mahanadhi,Nammavar. Kamal Haasan won Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor and Filmfare Best Actor for ‘Indian’ movie. In year 1994 , Haasan became the first actor to charge 15 million for a film. In 90’s he was appeared in ‘Chachi 420’ remake of ‘Avvai Shanmughi’.In 1998 he appeared in Singeetam Srinivasa Rao’s romantic comedy opposite Prabhu Deva.
In 2000, Haasan appeared in the comedy Thenali as a Sri Lankan Tamilian with PTSD who is under a psychiatrist’s care. Thenali, starring Malayalam actor Jayaram, was a box-office success. Haasan’s next film was 2001’s Aalavandhan, in which he played two roles: For one he had his head shaved and gained ten kilograms. To play the other Army major in Aalavandhan, he went to the NDA for a crash course. In 2004 Haasan appeared in Vasool Raja MBBS, a remake of Bollywood’s Munna Bhai M.B.B.S., with Sneha which was a box-office success.In 2006 Haasan’s long-delayed project, the stylish police story Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu, was a success. Directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon, the film is about a police officer sent to the US to investigate a series of medical murders. In 2008’s Dasavathaaram, he played ten roles; the film was released in a number of languages (including Tamil, Telugu and Hindi) throughout India and overseas. In year 2013 his film ‘Vishwaroopam’ was released in Hindi ‘Vishwaroop’ and won two National Film Awards at 60th National Film Awards. In year 2014, for 67th Cannes Film Festival he was appointed as official Indian delegate.
Other Work
He is involved in other social activities too-Kamal Welfare Association. He was project ambassador for Hridayaragam 2010, raise funds for an orphanage for HIV/AIDS affected children. In year 2010, he also launched children’s cancer relief fund. On 7 November 2014 he chose to clean Madambakkam lake in Chennai with Environmentalist Foundation of India’s Arun Krishnamurthy. In year 2015 he endorsed ‘Pothys’ brand for the first time.
