2018 Rolls-Royce Phantom

Henry Royce built his first car in 1904, and in that same year began a collaboration with car dealer Charles Rolls who agreed to sell all of Royce's cars exclusively, which were then branded as Rolls-Royces. In 1925, Rolls-Royce introduced the Phantom model, which was ultimately to go on to become their signature vehicle. Aside from a lull in the 1940s, the Phantom name has been in production ever since.

Rolls-Royce has announced the eighth-generation of the iconic model, and its most significant improvement over the old model is a technical one invisible to the onlooker and even the driver. Rolls-Royce has incorporated an advanced all-aluminum spaceframe design that will eventually see use in every model that Rolls-Royce has. The implications may be major. Going back to the 1920s and 1930s, for many luxury automobiles it was simply assumed that the buyer would hire out one of the many coachbuilders of the day to place their own body on the car. We may never return to the days where established manufacturers would generally provide little more than a rolling chassis to be outfitted by coachbuilders, but we may be moving towards a day when a significant percentage of cars, at least on the high-end, are outfitted with a broad selection of bodies per model.

What's impressive about this spaceframe is that it is both lighter and 30 percent more stiff than the monocoque chassis on the outgoing model.

Rolls-Royce has also focused heavily on making this the quietest car in the world, and used more than 286 lbs of sound insulation to this end, as well as two-layers of glazing nearly a quarter of an inch thick on the vehicle's body.

The 6.75 liter V12 engine is also new, and now uses twin turbochargers to produce more torque on the low end, with 664 lb-ft available at a mere 1700 rpm. Total power output is 563 hp, and the motor is mated to a ZF 8-Speed gearbox working with Satellite Aided Transmission (SAT).
