2018 Porsche Cayenne and Cayenne Turbo

Back in 2002, Porsche introduced the Cayenne, much to the consternation of at least some Porsche enthusiasts. The first Porsche with 4 doors, there was concern that the Cayenne would water down the sports car brand by following market trends that favored sports utility vehicles. Since that time, a favorable overall impression of the Cayenne by both the automotive media and the general public allayed those concerns, and today it's a mainstay of the Porche lineup.

Fast forward to today, and the third-generation Cayenne has just been announced. As might be expected, it surpasses its predecessor in almost every metric. The body has been lengthened by 63 mm, and the roof height is 9 mm lower for a slightly lower profile. The 770 liters of luggage compartment capacity is an increase of 100 liters over the outgoing model. The wheels are one inch larger, and the rear tires now have a wider track for the first time on a Cayenne.

Vehicle weight with the base Cayenne has dropped from 4497 lbs to 4376 lbs, a weight-savings of 121 lbs. 22 lbs of this improvement is thanks to the lithium-ion polymer battery. Other improvements include a tungsten carbide coating on the standard cast-iron disc brakes, which gives improved performance and reduced wear. Ceramic brakes are also available as an option, as is adaptive air suspension with three chamber techology, and rear axle steering.

The standard Cayenne with a six-cylinder tubocharged engine now produces 340 hp, or 40 hp more than its predecessor, and accelerates from 0-62 mph in 6.2 seconds. The twin-turbocharged V6 Cayenne S produces 440, or 20 hp more than the earlier model, with improved acceleration of 0-62 mph in 5.2 seconds.

The most powerful Cayenne Turbo features a 4 liter V8 producing a full 550 hp, or 30 hp more than the outgoing Cayenne Turbo. Peformance numbers include a 0-62 mph time is 4.1 seconds, or 3.9 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono package.
