2017 Mercedes-AMG Project ONE

Mercedes-Benz, the world's oldest car manufacturer, has debuted the showcar version of one of the most extreme performance cars in its long history, perhaps only matched by the SSK of the late 20s and early 30s. There was also the CLK GTR of the late 90s, but that was a limited production homologation car for the FIA GT Championship. By contrast, the Project ONE looks to be conceived from the ground up as a full hypercar competing with the best of Bugatti, McLaren, Ferrari, and others.

Power comes from a plug-in hybrid system utilizing one combustion engine and four electric motors producing over 1000 hp. The mid-mounted engine is a small 1.6 liter V6 that can reach speeds of 11,000 rpm. It is fed by a single turbocharger that is itself unique. It has separate gas and compressor turbines that are optimally located on the exhaust and intake sides of the engine while being connected with a shaft with one of the electric motors that can drive the compressor turbine to speeds of 100,000 rpm as needed. The benefit is that this eliminates all discernible turbo lag, which is normally an issue with small motors with a single turbochargers.

The gas engine has a high thermal efficiency of over 40%, which Daimler claims is unprecedented in a production car, with the normal thermal effiency range being in the area of 33-38%.

The car's AWD system utilizes two 161 hp motors at the front axle, each delivering power to the front wheel, and each capable of rotor revolutions up to 50,000 rpm, well beyond the 20,000 rpm of other premium motors. Individual acceleration and braking of each wheel allows for torque vectoring for optimal vehicle control

Production is to be limited to 275 examples, all of which are already sold out at a price in the area of $2.5 million. The upcoming production version will have a different name from Project ONE as well.
