2018 McLaren 570S Spider

The focus of the McLaren 570 series is affordability and practicality. At a starting price of about $188,600, the beautiful coupe is and will remain the most affordable McLaren model, at least in the United States. That's not its only appeal though, as a roomier interior and softer seats than cars like the 650S makes it a more practical sports car for regular driving. Cars like the 570S and 540C in the Sports Series have understandably allowed McLaren to double its global sales in 2016.

That makes the new 570 Spider a welcome addition to the McLaren lineup. The electrically operated roof opens and closes in 15 seconds, and stows beneath the tonneau cover that raises automatically to accomodate it. A glazed wind deflector to reduce wind buffeting can also be raised or lowered at the push of a button. Open top cars are virtually always heavier than their hardtop counterparts, in part because the chassis needs to be strengthened to maintain the vehicle's structural integrity. In this case, the added weight is quite low, as the design of the carbon fiber MonoCell II chassis did not require additional strengthening, and sawl as the Spider weighs only 101 lbs more than the Coupe, and the impressive 0-62 mph time of 3.2 seconds and top speed of 204 mph (with the roof up!) are unchanged from the Coupe.

Another subtle change is that the rear spoiler is 12 mm higher than the one on the Coupe, to accomodate for the different aerodynamics of the two designs.

The Spider is outfitted with the familiar 3.8 liter twin turbo V8 putting out 562 hp at 7500 rpm. It is backed up by a 7-speed seamless-shift gearbox with Launch Control. Carbon-ceramic brakes and electro-hydraulically assisted steering work in conjunction with Brake Steer, which applies subtle braking pressure to the inside rear wheel during a turn, thus reducing understeer.

Price is $208,800.
