2017 Ferrari 812 Superfast

Up until quite recently, Ferrari has had a decades-long tradition of using straight-forward naturally-aspirated engines across its lineup. This has begun to change in recent years with the introduction of Ferrari California T using turbochargers and LaFerrari hypercar offering a mild hybrid configuration. The 488 replacing the 458 has also made the move to turbocharging, and it seemed inevitable that Ferrari would eventually be bringing turbocharging and/or hybrid drives to their entire lineup. That day may come soon, but it's not today. The new 812 Superfast stands firmly in Ferrari tradition with its naturally-aspirated V12 and front-engine/rear-drive design.

The 812 Superfast replaces the F12berlinetta as the regular production flagship of the Ferrari lineup. The engine has been boosted in displacement from 6.2 to 6.5 liters, and uses a 350 bar direction injection system in its first appearance on a spark-ignition engine, and a control system for variable geometry inlet tracks, an F1 innovation seen on the F12tdf. Power has been increased from 730 to 789 hp, and torque takes a smaller jump from 509 to 530 lb-ft. This translates into a 0-62 mph time that rushes by in 2.9 seconds, on up to a top speed of 211 mph.

Incidentally, the whimsical moniker "Superfast" dates back to the Ferrari America model line built from 1951-1967, with several of the models and showcars using the Superfast name.
