2018 BMW M8 GTE

With the upcoming 8 Series, BMW will be debuting a matching race car to compete FIA World Endurance Championship. The M8 GTE will also mark the return of BMW to factory participation in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, a race the company previously won in 1999.

Power for the new GTE comes from a 4 liter twin turbocharged V8 putting out over 500 hp. The road-going 8 Series will probably have a 4.4 liter V8, but the rules limit displacement to 4 liter. That power is backed up a 6-speed sequential motorsport gearbox with a Sachs carbon fiber clutch and electric paddle shifters. The drive shaft is made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic.

The body shell is also CFRP, and carbon components contribute to further weight reductions, with the car weighing in 2690 lbs. Other features include a steering wheel with 16 buttons and 7 dials, a rear-view camera system with object recognition, and a live telemetry system to communicate with the pit crew.
