Since 2011, McLaren GT has been the GT race car manufacturing branch of McLaren Automotive. Following a successful 2015 season which saw wins on 4 continents, McLaren GT has announced their latest creation, the 2016 McLaren 650S GT3.

Like other McLarens of recent years, the 650S GT3 is powered by a 3.8 liter twin turbocharged V8 with a 6-speed sequential gearbox. It is limited to roughly 500 hp due to restrictors.

So far, the McLaren 650S GT3 has claimed double pole position and a new official lap record for the Mount Panorama circuit at 2 min, 1.286 seconds. It was also the overall winner earlier today (February 6, 2016) at Australia's Bathurst 12 Hour. With the season just beginning, the future for the 650S GT3 is full of promise.

Following the most successful season for McLaren GT, with the 650S GT3 winning on each of the four continents it competed on, 2016 will see more cars competing in more championships across the world. Plans for Factory Drivers Rob Bell and Alvaro Parente are now finalised along with confirmation of the signing of Côme Ledogar to the works line up. In addition, the recently-announced Driver Academy is further strengthened with Colin Thompson joining for the 2016 season. The announcements coincide with confirmation that the 650S GT3 will line up as part of an impressive display at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show alongside the three tier model range from McLaren Automotive for the first time.

Joining the Factory Driver line-up for the 2016 season is 24 year old Côme Ledogar. The young Frenchman made the switch from single-seater racing at the end of 2011, and has since enjoyed success in GT racing including champion of the Porsche Carrera Cup France in 2014, and runner-up in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup and Porsche Carrera Cup Italia last year. Among his plans for the season, it is confirmed that Ledogar will contest the Blancpain Endurance Series in a McLaren 650S GT3.

Rob Bell, 36, and Alvaro Parente, 31, will continue the relationship with McLaren GT having been part of the Factory Driver line up since 2012. The pairing has proved a formidable team with both claiming championship wins with the 650S GT3. Both drivers will join Tekno Autosports this weekend for the Liqui Moly Bathurst 12 Hour.

Having recently secured the Asian Le Mans Series title with customer team Clearwater Racing, Bell will now compete throughout Europe with the 650S GT3. He will take on the Blancpain Endurance Series and the Blancpain Sprint Series. Further plans for the season will be confirmed in the coming weeks.

Having secured the International GT Open title in 2015, Parente is taking on a new challenge for the 2016 season as he joins customer team K-PAX Racing / Flying Lizard Motorsports as part of the assault on the Pirelli World Challenge which will see four examples of the 650S GT3 on the grid. The Portuguese driver will make his championship debut at the Circuit of the Americas in March for the first of the 20 race calendar. His valuable experience of European circuits will also be added to as he is confirmed for the Blancpain Sprint Series.

Colin Thompson, 21, is the fourth driver to join the McLaren GT Driver Academy alongside Alex Fontana, Struan Moore and Andrew Watson. The young American from Doylestown, Pennsylvania has made a strong impression over the past few seasons securing the IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup title in 2014, followed by the Pirelli World Challenge Porsche Cup championship title last season. Thompson will join Parente as part of the K-PAX Racing / Flying Lizard Motorsports two car line-up in the Pirelli World Challenge.

McLAREN 650S GT3 CLAIMS DOUBLE POLE POSITION AND NEW LAP RECORD AT LIQUI MOLY BATHURST 12 HOUR

  • 650S GT3 breaks lap record on its debut outing at Mount Panorama
  • Pole position in Pro and Pro-Am categories for the first 12 Hour GT endurance race of the year
  • New Zealand born Van Gisbergen takes pole position to win Allan Simonsen pole position trophy

The McLaren 650S GT3 will make its debut start at the 2016 Liqui Moly Bathurst 12 Hour from pole position after an action-packed and record-breaking qualifying session. Shane Van Gisbergen posted the fastest time in both qualifying sessions to put the #59 650S GT3 of customer team Tekno Autosports on pole with the fastest time ever recorded at the 6.213km Mount Panorama circuit. Objective Racing, running the #11 650S GT3, secured pole position with the #37 Darrell Lea / Keltic Racing 650S GT3 a close second in the highly competitive Pro-Am class, and will line up on the second row of the 37 car grid.

After a positive morning practice session, the four 650S GT3s were quickly on the pace, running comfortably in the top 10. As the session progressed, Darrell Lea / Keltic Racing, Objective Racing and Tekno Autosports ran in the top three positions with each vying for the top spot. Mid-point through the session, New Zealand-born Van Gisbergen headed out on track in the iconic orange #59 Tekno Autosports 650S GT3 and was looking to make an immediate impression and making the most of a well-judged gap in the traffic. His first flying lap set a new benchmark for the session, and he quickly followed this up with an improved time of 2m 01.591s to end the session in P1.

The second qualifying session quickly followed and saw Objective Racing and Tekno Autosports back on track looking to improve further, and neither team disappointed. Warren Luff moved the striking black 650S GT3 up to a solid P3 overall and claimed pole position in the Pro-Am category, while Van Gisbergen went on to beat his own record pace by three tenths of a second to take the coveted pole position with a laptime of 2m 01.286s. The time secured Van Gisbergen the Allan Simonsen pole position trophy and set a new official lap record for Mount Panorama.
